Why WordPress?
WordPress is a free, Web-based software program people use to build their websites and blogs. Originally, WordPress was built just for blogs, but being a dedicated, open-source community, it has grown into something much bigger. Now it’s a great solution for creating websites, both large and small.
The beauty of today’s WordPress is CMS – a content management system. That means that you now have more control over your site, to make edits whenever you want to. No more waiting for your webmaster to change that phone number or add other fresh content.
There are four important reasons WordPress works so well for your website:
- The design of a WordPress site is based on Themes. Think of a theme as a powerful template. Themes come in many styles, include graphic images and are based on CSS (cascade styling sheets). There are hundreds of free themes and an incredible selection of premium (paid) themes, each with its own editing settings, such as font colors and sizes, multi-media functions, custom header placement, and lots of other features. Although there are a ton of free themes, we recommend purchasing a premium theme for your WordPress website. Why? Because 1) paid themes are upgraded to function with each new update of WordPress and 2) you get much better customer support. Also, each theme allows you some editing, but to do more extensive edits, you need to understand html and CSS. And, overall, how much you can edit the look of your theme will depend on the theme itself.
- WordPress lets you create and edit new web pages and blog posts using only a web browser. You need no knowledge of HTML or other coding. The WordPress editing interface is intuitive and easy-to-use. It works a lot like simple word processing software. As the site administrator, you can grant various levels of access to others, allowing them to contribute to the website/blog. And the best part is that, because it is a Web-based application, you can create and edit pages from anywhere with an Internet connection.
- Blogging is a great way to interact with current and potential clients/customers. It is also great for search engines, because search engines love fresh content. If you choose to incorporate a blog into your site, WordPress allows you to update your website/blog frequently and receive comments from readers
- WordPress also has lots of cool plugins and widgets, an added feature that makes your website more dynamic and interactive. Just a few of the things plugins do: increase your SEO (search engine optimization), catch spam, back up databases and create custom forms. Widgets can be placed in various widget-friendly spots to add value to your site. Widgets can allow visitors to sign up for your enewsletter, purchase your CD, play a video, post your latest Twitters…the list is practically endless. Best of all, most widgets are easily installed.
